GMI and the Principles for Responsible Investment

GovernanceMetrics International has been a signatory of the Principles for Responsible Investment since their inception in 2006. The Principles were developed by an international group of institutional investors reflecting the increasing relevance of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues to investment practices. There is a growing view among investment professionals that ESG issues can affect the performance of investment portfolios. The Principles for Responsible Investment provide the framework for considering these issues in everyday business practices and are as follows:

  • We will incorporate ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes.
  • We will be active owners and incorporate ESG issues into our ownership policies and practices.
  • We will seek appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities in which we invest.
  • We will promote acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry.
  • We will work together to enhance our effectiveness in implementing the Principles.
  • We will each report on our activities and progress towards implementing the Principles.

As a governance research and ratings firm and a signatory of the Principles, addressing ESG issues is one of the fundamental objectives of GMI’s business model. GMI was founded to provide institutional investors an objective way of assessing corporate governance risk as well as governance leaders in their portfolios. GMI research has in fact shown that companies which emphasize corporate governance and transparency can, over time, generate superior returns and economic performance and lower their cost of capital.

Asset Owners – GMI Helps Analyze Broad Portfolios

The $20 trillion signatories to the Principles for Responsible Investment have pledged to incorporate governance issues into investment analysis. For investors interested in a high-level assessment of their portfolio holdings, including signatories to the rapidly expanding Principles for Responsible Investment, GMI offers its Portfolio Analysis service. Working from a holdings list, GMI will prepare a high-level assessment, rating entire funds or portfolios on their governance quality and risk to determine whether portfolio holdings are in line with benchmark standards.

The Portfolio Analysis service has already shown to be of value to institutional investors of all types, including top plan sponsors who include these investment criteria into manager evaluations and RFP’s, and investment managers and mutual funds looking to incorporate the results in their marketing material. GMI highlights positive fund attributes for client service and marketing use. Outlier holdings are also identified for internal/investment use. This service is intended:

  • For marketing and client service, for independent confirmation that the manager’s process is within benchmark on the long-term, extra-financial risk factors.
  • For internal and investment use, to identify outlier GMI rated stocks and corporate bonds in the holdings.

Investment Managers – GMI’s Research and Ratings Service

Best investment practice has evolved to include analyzing long-term, extra-financial factors. To support this GMI provides quarterly company Rating Reports, daily news updates, e-Alerts and downloadable numeric ratings for stock screening.

GMI Rating Reports and subscription services are intended primarily as ESG tools. Each Rating Report includes a summary of the rated company's overall governance profile and commentary on each of the six research categories employed by GMI. Through the use of standardized rating criteria, pay alignment rankings, red flags, expert commentary and news updates, GMI offers investment and governance professionals an unprecedented level of analysis for considering governance issues. In addition to an Overall Global Rating, each of the six research categories (shown in sample image below) receives a separate rating. These are meant to help subscribers see where a company is particularly strong or weak.

Rating Reports, numeric ratings and individual metrics are downloadable online. Major governance issues are updated daily and "Red Flagged" as special e-mail alerts to notify subscribers about a governance issue that has the potential to affect shareholder value. GMI offers global and regional subscriptions, including North America, Asia-Pacific, Euro and Emerging Markets, or we can customize a subscription to suit your specific needs.
